GLOSS - GLobal Ocean Social Sciences
The United Nations General Assembly has declared the decade 2021-2030 as the « Decade of Ocean Sciences for Sustainable Development ». The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO is in charge of submitting a programme for this decade. To this purpose, a series of international events, workshops and symposia are organized to contribute to the work of IOC. IOC is assisted in this task by a group of 19 international experts, the Executive Planning Group.
L'Assemblée générale des Nations Unies a déclaré la décennie 2021-2030 "Décennie des sciences océaniques pour le développement durable". La Commission océanographique intergouvernementale (IOC) de l'Unesco est chargée de présenter un programme pour cette décennie. À cette fin, une série de manifestations, d'ateliers et de colloques internationaux sont organisés pour contribuer aux travaux de l'IOC. L'IOC est assistée dans cette tâche par un groupe de 19 experts internationaux, le Groupe exécutif de planification.
Objectives
In this context, the Ocean University Initiative has proposed to the MARE conference in June 2019 to organize an international event, between conference and workshop. The aims are to gather researchers in the human and social sciences, in all their diversity, to identify central issues and conditions for the involvement of the social sciences in the UN initiative. Our event, under the name GLOSS (GLobal Ocean Social Sciences), has been labelled « Ocean Decade Event » by the IOC
Method
There will be 6 brainstorming sessions organized in small groups, 6 to 8 people around 1 table with a maximum of 120 participants. Each group will be invited to discuss on series of thematic, disciplinary and methodological questions with the aim of co-creating a ground-breaking report that will be submitted to the Executive Planning Group to be held in January 2020. This contribution will also feed the discussion at the Global Planning Meeting planned in June 2020 to gather the views of stakeholders before the adoption of the implementation plan for the decade by the United Nations General Assembly’s in November 2020.
Venue and registration
The event will take place at « Le Quartz » congress hall in Brest (France) on November 5th and 6th.
Registration fee is 100 € to cover cost of lunches and organization, extra 30€ for those who wish to join for social dinner. We invite PhD students and Post-Doc to apply to act as group discussion rapporteur; registration fee waiver for selected candidates. See registration web page for conditions.

Dans ce contexte, l'Ocean University Initiative a proposé à la conférence MARE en juin 2019 d'organiser un événement international, entre la conférence et l'atelier. L'objectif est de rassembler des chercheurs en sciences humaines et sociales, dans toute leur diversité, afin d'identifier les questions centrales et les conditions de l'implication des sciences sociales dans l'initiative des Nations Unies. Notre événement, sous le nom de GLOSS (GLobal Ocean Social Sciences), a été qualifié d'"événement de la Décennie des océans" par l'IOC.
Méthode
Il y aura 6 séances de brainstorming organisées en petits groupes de 6 à 8 personnes autour d'une table avec un maximum de 120 participants. Chaque groupe sera invité à débattre d'une série de questions thématiques, disciplinaires et méthodologiques dans le but de co-créer un rapport novateur qui sera soumis au Groupe exécutif de planification qui se tiendra en janvier 2020. Cette contribution alimentera également les débats de la réunion de planification mondiale prévue en juin 2020 afin de recueillir les points de vue des parties prenantes avant l'adoption du plan de mise en œuvre pour la décennie par l'Assemblée générale des Nations Unies en novembre 2020.
Lieu et inscription
L'événement aura lieu au Palais des Congrès " Le Quartz " à Brest (France) les 5 et 6 novembre prochains.
Les frais d'inscription sont de 100 € pour couvrir le coût des déjeuners et de l'organisation, 30 € supplémentaires pour ceux qui souhaitent participer à un dîner social. Nous invitons les doctorants et les post-doctorants à poser leur candidature pour agir en tant que rapporteur de discussion de groupe ; exonération des frais d'inscription pour les candidats sélectionnés.
